What an excellent weekend. I had fun running tekken 6, Soul Calibur 1&2 and Virtua Fighter 5. We started off really well in Tekken 6 then about 2 or 3pm we lost power in half the room. So for a while I was scrambling to get my stations back up. I got 3 stations up and had to move 2 to another area or the room with power. After 40 minutes I was back up to full speed.

I personally had fun playing Soul Calibur 1 and Garou. Even when I lost I had tons of fun. Esdpecially in Garou since not a whole of people play the game in my area. I was suprised to see I tied for 5th place losing only to Justin Wong and Steve H.

I will probably start doing game reviews again since I haven't done so in nearly 4 years. So there are many great things to look forward to on the GVN.

To be honest I had it with Justin.tv. They keep playing around with the sites design and everytime they change the layout they try to make a friendly and easy to use broadcast option. Well to be honest its too simplistic and I would rather save the cpu usage and not use FMLE and have IE open just to chat with people.

So I made the switch to Ustream and to be honest its ten times better. I was having issues with my stream looking really choppy and for awhile I thought it was my laptop. Well its not. Turns out Justin.tv just has a crappy encoder. So from now on I will be streaming my casuals sessions and tournaments on Ustream.tv

Also I want to apologize for taking so long with my next lost gems. To be honest an rpg game takes quite a long time so I might consider not postponing 7th Saga and doing another game. I'll let you know my decision after Winter Brawl.

I have decided to take a break for the rest of the year. That includes the lost gems videos as well. I will have a new one in January on the Super Nintendo Classic 7th Saga. I also plan to recreate the previous lost gems into videos as well titling them as Lost Gems Revisited.

Now thanks to Eric, the date(Feb 27th) for the next GVN Winter Brawl is out. GVN WB 4 will be held once again at the beautiful Sheraton Suites Hotel in Philadelphia, Pa. I will post all information regarding this tournament as well as the January Grand Master Monthly within the next couple of weeks.

GVN's Guide to Importing

So you want to import videogames from other countries but don’t know how. But you have no idea how to get a hold of them. Well, my friend it’s much easier than you think. But there are some things to consider. Where are you going to buy them? How much can I get them for? Are there enough copies available? Can I get them cheaper somewhere else? And most importantly, how am I going to play it on my “region specific” system? Fear not, these are easy to answer.

But first, what game do you want? You have to be very specific when finding the game you want. Why? Well, when it comes to importing, some Japanese games have some really long names. For instance, I have a game called “Asuka Gaiden” for the Dreamcast, but it’s full name is “Fushigi no Dungeon Furai no Asuka Gaiden.” Crazy isn’t it? Finding the game you want can be difficult you do not know its full name. So do a little research before you go hunting at an online import specialty store. By the way, that is next thing on the agenda, which is where to get your games.

Online videogame stores are your best chance at finding the game you want. Some of the best and most respected Online importing good stores include Nation Console Support (NCS for short), Videogame Depot, Ebay and Videogame Liquidators. NCS and Videogame Depot are the best online stores for finding that hard to find game. Both have huge libraries of games, they have tremendous service and they are very well respected. Those are the most important things before ordering a game online. NCS is well known for their fast shipping and getting their games in as quickly as possible. I can also vouche as I have repeatedly bought from them many times. Videogame Depot is well known for their easy menu layout on their website and really cheap prices.

Now there are some companies that can screw you over on and it’s best to avoid them. One company, Buy-rite games, has done this to me a couple of times with their over priced games, their slow and very expensive shipping methods and unhelpful customer service. I once ordered a game from there and after a month, I found that the game was temporarily sold out and they were waiting for the next shipment. What upset me the most is how they cashed my payment without even having the game in stock. So I called them up and fought with them to get my money back. I haven’t ordered from them since. In fact last I checked, they went out of business.

Pricing is very simple. Just check every site that sells the game you want. This also includes comparing shipping prices. If you find one is selling the game cheaper with reasonable shipping prices than it’s a no brainer. But sometimes a very rare game like Ikaruga, can be hard to find and a bit pricey when you do locate it. Be sure to keep a lookout for rare games on Ebay. Ebay can be an excellent source for finding almost whatever game you’re looking for but bidding can get expensive as well. I managed to get a game of Guilty Gear X for $30 cheaper than Buy-Rite Games asking price. But be prepared to do battle with hundreds of other people who want that same game.

Now the biggest problem for importers is the regional lockouts built into each gaming console, you can’t just pop in the disc/cartridge and start playing. Due note that most handheld gaming devices don’t have region lock, but it doesn’t hurt to double check. Now first to play your new imports you’ll need one of either two methods. The first method includes putting a chip into your console that modifies your system and bypasses the regional settings. This is what we call a “Mod Chip.” Installing a mod chip is illegal and will void your system warranty.

You can order them online and install them yourself but that can be hazardous and you could make a mistake. And if you make a mistake, you can’t have it sent in for repairs because your warranty will be voided. Now if you are unsure about installing the mod chip yourself, you can usually mail your system to an online import shop and they will do it for you. But that can be expensive. Now the other method includes using a boot disk that can bypass the regional block and allow you to play almost all import games. Due note the phrase almost. Some games have been shown to not work properly with a boot disc. Also this method does not void your system’s warranty and it’s a whole lot cheaper than getting a mod chip installed.

Of course there is a third modding option and it’s mostly for this current generation of consoles but was introduced on the original xbox. This new form of modding is called bios modding or softmods. This allows you to install a brand new OS on the consoles which will not only allow you to play imports but install games onto your consoles harddrive. However I will not suggest such a method as the game companies continue to provide updates for their systems which will not only render the softmod useless but lock your system and ban your accounts.

So there you have it. Your answers about import games have been answered. I hope you will use this knowledge wisely. Now go out there and buy all the sailor moon and dragon ball z games you want. You know you’re into that stuff, don’t lie. Until then, keep on gaming.

All things aside from my slight mental state that ended the marathon 5 hours early, I want to take a look back at my memories of the Dreamcast and the joy and excitement it brought me in my early adulthood. I remember reading about the Dreamcast back in my early issues of Game Informer in 1998. Having never owned a Saturn and having every attachment for the Sega Genesis I never really took a moment to think about the Dreamcast with exception to thinking that those were some very beautiful graphics.

Flash forward to September 9th, 1999. I graduated from high school in early June of that year and at the time I didn't even think about buying the Dreamcast. Come end of July I got a job working for McDonald's and suddenly I was feeling somewhat independent. I had money of my own. My parents wouldn't let me have a job while I was in high school so for a while I felt like I was being told what I can and can't do. But now I was making money. I was paying for college classes, paying for books, paying for transportation(taking 2 buses) to get to college. And out of impulse I went to Funcoland(now a gamestop) and bought a Sega Dreamcast on launch day. I didn't buy any games because I was broke after that but my mom worked at Hollywood video and brought home a few games to play till I could buy some.

I enjoyed playing Sonic Adventure and Ready To Rumble Boxing among the games rented. Sonic especially was captivating because it felt like Mario 64 but 10 times faster(not better, completely undebatable). I enjoy the Sonic and Knuckles(see what I did there) levels the most. Knuckles' levels were pretty awesome. They were huge and full of areas to explore as you were looking for shards of chaos emeralds. And Read to rumble was off the wall fun. Goofy looking characters with equally goofy names. How can you hate on a game with Afro Thunder in it?

A couple more weeks go buy and I bought my first 2 dreamcast games. Soul Calibur and Sega NFL2K. Wow. Soul Calibur was the perfected port of the arcade version with better graphics and tons of content. The depth of Soul Calibur was beyond anything I have ever experienced in any other fighting game before it. Tons of unlockable players, a quest mode, galleries and different types of multiplayer modes were just the tip of the iceberg. NFL2k was just as equally impressive with its stunning graphics and in depth gameplay. NFL Quarterback Club 98 was the last football game I played and compared the NFL2K, QB Club was rubish. It dwarfed even the Madden series before they(Madden) made the jump to the PS2.

It would be safe to say that the Dreamcast turned me into the gamer I am now as the months went by in 1999. The Genesis and N64 were fun to play but I didn't nearly play them as much as I did my Dreamcast. I found there to be a ton of highly addicting games for the system like Evolution, E.G.G., other 2K sports titles like NBA2K and NHL2K, Marvel vs Capcom, and Tony Hawk. By the end of 1999 I was a full fledged Sega fanboy(not an evil fanboy by todays standards).

The year 2000 started off with a bang. Not the Y2k bang everyone was expecting but a good bang. Great titles like Resident Evil: Code Veronica, World Series Baseball, Chu Chu Rocket(The Dreamcast's first online title), Capcom VS SNK, and Bang Gunship Elite were truly amazing. Especially Capcom vs SNK. It was a fighting fanboy's dream come true. Two fighting elites combining into one hot matchup. This was the first fighting game I was addicting to until Street Fighter 3 was ported to the system later in the year. However those titles were nothing compared the the big titles waiting at the end of the year.

In 3 consecutive weeks, The Dreamcast had 3 of its best games. First was Skies of Arcadia, followed by Grandia 2 and then the grand daddy of open world gaming, Shenmue. All 3 titles captivated me for months. Especially Skies Of Arcadia and its amazing air ship battles and compelling story. Shenmue was a bit slow for me but I still dove right in. It has a surrealism to it that gave you the feeling you are a part of its world. As the year winded down, the holiday season looked good for Sega especially when competing the against the Playstation 2, who was suffering from a massive console shortage.

The beginning of 2001 was bitter sweet. On one hand the game everyone waited for, Phantasy Star Online, was released. On the other was the announcement sega fans never saw coming. A couple months into the new year, Sega President Peter Moore made the announcement that Sega will be leaving the hardware business and moving to 3rd party support. Was I devastated? No, but very disappointed in that so many great games are on this system, with many more on the way, and no one was taking the plunge to buy a Dreamcast to check them out.

Of course all those feelings of disappointment faded and I continued to enjoy the system to its final US game release in 2002 and beyond. The year 2001, still had some of the best games released for the Dreamcast, many of which could be enjoyed online. Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament filled the void of first person shooters and provided some of the best online gaming experiences for the system. Phantasy Star Online continued to be the stellar game that I played the most. Over 500 hours have been spent on that game between 3 characters I have made.

Of course 2001 still had some major disappointments. Along with the announcement of the switch to 3rd party support, many games slated for release on the Dreamcast in the US were either canned or moved to other system. Rez and Head Hunter were available for the Dreamcast in Europe and Japan but they were ported to the Playstation 2. Shenmue 2 was the game that angered many fans. Shenmue 2 was moved to gaming newcomer Mircosoft's Xbox. The game still saw release in Europe where many gamers imported their copy from including me. Shenmue is truely an amazing game and fixed many of the flaws of the first involving it pacing and interactivity.

Among the games cancelled for the system was Half-life. Half-life was practically complete and ready to ship but Valve decided not to release it. Half-life surfaced a few years later as a beta disc for sale on ebay and quickly spread across the Internet community. Another game that was canned was Agatha which unfortunately information for is scarce.

About the time when Shenmue 2 was moved to the Xbox for us exclusivity, is when I started imported games for my Dreamcast. My first import was Shenmue 2 PAL, followed by the PAL versions of Head Hunter and REZ. Another game from Europe I bought was Evil Twin which is a very dark and engaging 3D platforming game. Even after the systems final US release I continued to import games. Among my favorite games were Sakura War 3 and 4, Lack of love, Ikaurga, and Capcom vs SNK 2.

The last US game I bought was NHL2k2 and it was a great game but its a bittersweet footnote in a system that came up short in many areas. My dreamacst is still hooked up and I play it occasionally from time to time when I am tired of the redundancy of most games that are released in this day and age. The Dreamcast to me showcased some of Sega's best in gaming. They were willing to take chances that many companies today won't. Sega made some originals that will continue to stand out for generations to come. I To this day and beyond I will continue to play my dreamcast with as much excitement as I did then. Happy 10th Anniversary Sega Dreamcast.

Dreamcast Charity has Ended!

No one really cared. No one took interest. All my hard work to promote this was for naught. I wanted to have a fun day of friends getting together and reliving some fun nostalgic moments but that never happened sav but 1 buddy of mine who could only stay for a couple of hours. As time past it became apparent that no one cared so I decided to just cut the stream and end the marathon as my growing depression was just killing the joy that the day was supposed to be filled with.

Oh my goodness, Summer Jam was off the hook! It started slow but it picked up and an wonderfully. almost 150+ people arrived and brought their A game. Maryland, Virginia, New York, South Jersey, DC, Philly and the rest of PA represented. What most people do not know is that I have Aspergers Syndrom. For many years growing up was difficult because of my odd behavior and social habits. I was easily picked on and ridiculed. My parents made a strong effort to get me the help I needed to control my behavior and improve my social skills. Throughout middleschool and highschool I have counselors who went out of their way to help me to improve myself. In my junior years my counseling came to an abrupt stop as the program was discontinued by the company who ran it. From then on I continued to work and improve myself. It is not 10 years since my high school graduation and I am now a happily married man with a very loving and understanding wife.

The origins of this marathon was just for fun but after watching several Speed Gamer marathons I thought it best to give the Dreamcast marathon more meaning. I would like to announce that UFC Undisputed 2009 has been added to the lineup at GVN Summer Jam. The rules are currently under discussion as this will be the first ever offline tournament. There will also be $500 up for first. At the moment here are the current rules. Note that they are subject to change.

I would say that my batteries are now fully charged. I am back and ready to do some more fun stuff. First on the agenda is practice for a tournament I am going to this weekend. After that its another tournament the following weekend. However the follow-up one will be huge. Why? Cuase its the WCG Fight Club Tournament. So far over 200 people have signed up to fight for $500 of cash for Virtua Fighter 5, Soul Calibur 4, Street Fighter 4 and Dead or Alive 4. This is going to be exciting, and GVN is going to be there, camera and all, to capture the event. I'll report from time to time on how the event is going to keep everyone in on the loop.

Also I am in the midst of planning the next GVN with my partner Eric and trying to get the footage from my dad of the last GVN. He has them saved on his Mac and has't been able to put them on a dvdrw yet. He's a busy guy.

Well it was a good run and while me and my friends were about to complete the marathon, the Dreamcast on the other hand couldn't. As the beginning of the final hour arrived, the Dreamcast simply got tired. It wouldn't spin. it wouldn't read. It can boot the the bios but that was it. Oh well. I say it was a sucess regardless seeing as the dreamacst was on for a hour or two before the marathon began. But we still had fun.

The official announcement will come soon but for now I want everyone to know whats going on. Virtual Rush is currently in the middle of moving and doesn't have a new venue yet. In Fact they won't be open most likely when the Winter Brawl takes place. So I have taken the steps necessary to keep everything on track. Winter Brawl will take place on Feb 28th and so far it looks like it might be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Philadelphia. Its about 2 miles from the airport. First off this was the most horrible experience I have ever been a part of. I was promised a lot of stuff from the VGXPO people to help run this whole thing smoothly and then I got left hanging when it came to game time. I had to push back the tournament because we didn't have a ps3 with SC4 stuff or a copy of the game for that matter. We had the vgxpo staff screwing everything up from the brackets to registration to changing my rules. Once we finally got a copy tyo play I was forced to do a 44 man single elim tourney with the final 4 going into double elim to get a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place rankings.

As being my first expo, I am really excited to be a part of. So on friday I will walking around the expo meeting people and trying to get the GVN name out there. On saturday I will running the GVN tournaments with Dead Or Alive 4, Tekken 4 DR, and Soul Calibur 4. There will also be tournaments for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Halo 3, And other games which will start on friday. On sunday I might walk around the expo some more and help my friends finish their tournaments. Well.... how's everything? Yeah its been a while. For starters here's what is going on. Red Dragon is working on some mini reviews for games he's been playing and I will be working on a new lost gems. Also, don't froget about the VGxpo, I will be there to run 3 ideogame tournaments with a grand prize of $350 each.

The Annual Review

In the recent times, we have begin to see more released titles, new features to next generation consoles, and gamer created ideas that are either considered or used by current developers. In my busy schedule, I managed to gather enough spare time to take a close look at some new and old titles and review them.

Assassin's Creed

This game is different in a way from most other adventure games that i have come across. Most adventure games you can figure out the story line either right around the beginning or around the middle. With this game, you don't figure out whats going to happen until you reach the last chunk of the game. The graphics are very well put together and the story line is good as well. One of the things that i started to notice off bat about this game is that what you do in the game is just about the same thing over and over again until the end of the game. Repitiveness is something that kill a game very easily. They made it look very nice in terms of graphics and advertising the game.

Trailors were very well put together and there is enough freedom for you to do what you want to do, how you accomplish a mission, and when are you going to accomplish it. The other thing that I noticed about the game was they did a good job masking the real storyline in the game with the advertisments. They made it sound like it was going to take place in a previous time but it was something different than any of us would have expected.

My rating: 7/10

Call of Duty 4

At first, when I have seen this game i thought, "ok, another army game, big deal." Apparently I was wrong. They always say not to judge a book by its cover. When I first started playing this game, I went right into the storyline. The graphics is really well put together and I give credit to them for that. To me, It seems as if the graphics match the console or all games should have this level of graphics put into them. Gameplay is well put together and the multiplayer isn't bad. It can be better but the campaign pickes up for it.

Im usually not a fan of army games but this one is the game I will make an exmention for. This game is really nice to play in surround sound too. Makes the game feel a little more realistic. I never actually got to see any trailers for the game but the into for it was very well done. The game also could use some tweaks here and there but not much more than that.

My rating: 6/10

Soulcaliber IV

Soul Caliber IV made its debut and people from various fighting communities were talking about it. Some fighter players left their current fighting game to go to this game, espically some of the dead or alive fighting fans. A lot of people were talking about this game saying things like "DOA will die once this game comes out" or "soul cal is is going to be in the next cgs." While i was out of town for the weekend of the GVN summer bash, my kid brother went out and bought this game and I decided to take a look at it once I got back into town.

Soul Caliber IV is a weapon based fighting game where you can perform various attacks and defense moves. It various depending on who you choose as a character. In a recent release, they added darth vader to the xbox 360 version of the game. When i started playing this game, I noticed that the game had its major faults that would prevent the game from staying as a big title. They key problem is the online lobby system. When you make a online lobby, you cannot change game settings without making a brand new lobby. I also noticed that if you enter a room when the other players are in a fight, you cannot hear them and they cannot hear you. That is just a few problems that I had with this game. Overall, the game is somewhat well put together. It has its major flaws and its time when it shines.

As you may have noticed, the last two years GVN has spent mostly running game tournaments and not doing so much in the jouralism field. Well, with the addition of a new member, Red Dragon, I am looking to slowly return to some of GVN's roots. It's a hard trek to follow back to the begining of where everything began. But it should be worth it. So stay tuned for some more lost gem features, maybe a game review or two and some interviews as we try to make GVN more than just a videogame tournamnt scene.

in terms of getting to the convention cetner its quite easy. Its on Arch street between 11th and 13th.

If you are taking the bus to philly take the china town bus. It will take you to the philly station which is only a few blocks from the center.

Same for people taking the train. You'll be dropped off near the Market East station, take the exit and you should be on market street. walk west to 13th street then north till you hit arch st.

VGexpo tournaments November 21st-23rd

As it stands right now GVN has been asked to run some tournaments for Virtual Rush at the VGexpo. The VGexpo will be held at the Philadelphia Convention Center. I will Be there to run 4 tournaments split betwen Saturday Nov22nd and Sunday Nov 23rd. So far the only details I have recieed from my associates at VR is a gaurenteed $500 prize for first place. Also the pricing for getting into the expo is a 3 day pass for $25(by registering at their website) or $30 at the door. I am looking into the possiblity of that being lowere for people who only want to be there for the tournament.

GVN is probably the best event I’ve been to in a long time. The only event I can say that is close in terms of excitement as this would be my cousins bachelor party in the streets of iseral at 2 in the morning where we were shooting 45’s in the air. That’s another story though for another time.

The first day we left my house and made it to the house of hubbs around 6 to 6:30 pm eastern time zone. We parked in the parking lot across the street and I called hubbs and told him, “Can you step out to your front door.” All the houses on that block looked the same and the parking spots for them were behind the houses but I didn’t pay much attention at the time being.

After we were greeted by hubbs (who looks like my twin), we proceeded to his living room where me and him were showing off pictures on each of our computers. We started to do casuals at his house for a bit and we proceeded to do offline training for tomorrow’s event. We played into the early morning and then we got some sleep.

The day of the event was filled with hype, casuals, random moments, the meeting of new people, bragging, and showing of DOA 3.1 (courtesy of sorwah). If there is anything I learned from GVN, it is that people can tell the difference between which tv’s cause lag. The thing is though, I couldn’t tell the difference between the LCD’s (which were used for doa), and the tube tv’s (which were used for virtual fighter, tekken, and brawl). The hype of the event was there as soon as the people started showing up. I got to meet a lot of cool people including:

The first game to start off was DOA 3.1, the japenese version of DOA 3. The entry fee for this was a dollar. Since it was a cheap entry fee, I decided to jump into it and see how I would do. The tournament matches were pretty close and at the end I came in 7th place. I’m thinking top 8 isn’t too bad considering I never really played DOA 3 and I was trying to copy stuff from DOA ULTIMATE and DOA 4.

The next game that started was the Dead Or Alive 4 tag team tournament. I entered with my student, supasupakoopa. He has been training with me and H20 Tildaleaf as well as doing some self training in sparring. Either way, we kinda knew each other’s moves and we used that to dominate a good chunk of the brackets. We ended up placing in the top 5 for this one.

I didn’t really pay much attention to what games kicked off after doa4 tag, but I think the virtual fighter, tekken, brawl, and soul caliber tournament kicked off after these ones did. I watched a couple of matches and I live streamed a bit of it but it ended pretty well.

The last one to get off the ground was DOA 4 singles. I don’t understand why this one in particular took a while to get started. After it started, I got paired right off the bat against hatifry and I sent him to losers. I think he was kinda pissed off at that. After he got sent to losers and I moved onto the second round brackets, I got paired off against nikki, (sweetkisses), my friends student. I would say out of the entire tournament, the 2 closest matches were me and nikki and my student, supasupakoopa, against phoenix. Talk about epic when a match is decided by one hit. It was like watching an epic movie scene. I couldn’t describe it very well but it was close, intense, and nuts.

About 8 hours later the top 3 of each tournament were decided and most of us decided to go to a place called tom jones. It’s a diner with some good food. Im glad it wasn’t expensive because gas burned my wallet the next day. 50 dollars to fill supa’s gas tank and it was my turn to pay up for gas. Just like the first day when I left for gvn, my parents were calling my phone up and down but it wasn’t as bad. I have come to realize why that is. The reason is because that my parents were enjoying a LCD tv that they have just bought. 6 hours later and we arrived back in ohio and at my place. The only thing I was asked by my parents when they opened the door for me was “how was your trip?” Im trying to take a shot at going to Seasons beatings III, NEC9, and GVN east coast winter brawl. Looks like I’m back to where I started, but I had fun with this event and met a lot of cool people.

When I got first word of GVN, it was in a thread on the Dead or Alive Central forums in the tournament announcement thread. I read the specs of it and I saw that it was going to happen in Media, PA. and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to try and meet some new people and hopefully have a good time. As soon as I set my mind into going, the first couple of things I did was start training more often as well as begin the talks with my parents about going.

Now I hate it when people keep telling me, “dude your 19, you can do whatever you want, your parents shouldn’t have a say in it.” Well here is the thing, my parents, unlike other parents, were born and raised in the Middle East. They are going to be stricter than the average parents because they were taught that family is the center of everything. They were taught how to raise kids to be disciplined and respectful. Then I get the “you should move out and get your own place” excuse. I got my own reasons for not moving out, but I won’t share them here.

Moving on, I jumped on the ball and got things going starting with my #1 important issues, getting there and having a place to say. Courtesy of Hubbsdoctor and some words put in from Rikuto, I got housing for myself and my friend supasnupakoopa. Supasnupakoopa also offered me transportation to the house of hubbs as long as I paid my end of gas. This is the #1 thing that is stopping some people from going to most offline competitions. People I know online have some really good skill and potential, but they cannot demonstrate it in the offline scene because of transportation, housing issues, lack of fund, etc. but you guys get the point.

The newest thing that has been offered to this tournament is the live webcast of the entire event. That’s right, using my laptop with the built in webcam and microphone as well as my Xbox live vision cam; I will be live streaming the entire event. Me and hubbs are expecting a big online audience for this. I’ve been testing this out and now I got the specs of it down and we are ready to go.

The days are winding down and the day of the event is now around the corner. I am getting the final preparations of the trip together and people are getting their stuff packed, plane tickets bought, and getting over to the venue. I hope to meet new people, learn new things about doa4 and hopefully not get my ass kicked in the first round. I say good luck to those who will make it, it will be a pleasure meeting you, and bring it on.

Top 10 movie based games.

Prepared to be shocked and awed people, I have compiled a top ten list of the best Movie Based Video Game adaptations ever. Some will shock you, others you may not have heard of but you will soon know that for every 8 crappy movie based games there is a diamond in the rough. This list also includes spin-offs and pseudo sequels.

10. Gremlins 2: The New Batch – NES

Damn Skippy. This little gem is not only a great adaptation but it’s even better than the movie. Gremlins 2 punt you in control of the super adorable Gizmo as he makes he way around a NYC skyscraper populated with the demonic little green buggers. The game consisted of some great platforming action in an isometric view similar to the The Legend of Zelda. It’s definitely a forgotten classic that needs reviving on the Wii.

9. Batman Returns – Sega Gamegear

Now here’s the first shocker on the list. Granted Batman Returns on the NES and SNES were good games, I felt that the Gamegear version was more true to what a Batman game should be. Great platforming action, awesome boss fights and some great graphics for the little handheld put this game onto the list.

8. The Godfather – Xbox, PS2, PC

The Godfather game is a game that borrows a lot of elements from GTA and the legendary film trilogy. However, it follows the story of an underling who works for the mob while the story of Corleone family is told. What made The Godfather great was its surrealism and freedom in the city that the game takes place in. A great game that should be given the respect it deserves.

7. The Lion king – SNES, Genesis

Lion king is possible one of Disney’s greatest animated films of all time, so making a game is a no brain-er. The game captured every theme of the film from the music down to the colorful details of each stage. The platforming action was top notch and very respectful to the Disney classic. Just forget that Disney released a sequel a few years later.

6. Terminator 2: The Arcade Game – Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Gamegear, PC

Besides Street Fighter 2, T2 was the other amazing arcade game that was eating up everyone’s quarters in the arcade. This game has fast blazing light gun tooting action. You take control of a nailed down machinegun and pelt bullets into the numbers enemies from throughout the movie with multiple objectives. One particular level is the T-1000 chases scene as he controlled a helicopter and a semi and it was your duty to blow them to little bits before he destroyed John Connor’s lil truck.

5. Willow – NES

Willow was an amazing movie that was screaming for an rpg-like game conversion. And that we did get in the form on an action RPG similar to Zelda. The game was pretty difficult as well but it was good looking, a lengthy game and very fun. My only complaint was the lack of a save feature as Willow only provided passwords to continue your progress.

4. The Hunt For Red October – Nes, Snes, Genesis, Gameboy, Amiga, PC

There were two games of this released, one was based on the novel and the other on the movie. It’s the latter that earns a spot on this list obviously. Red October is a game with many elements in it. Red October included side scrolling, deep sea strategy combat and cinematic cut scenes which very few games at the time did. The game put a strong emphasis on survival by forcing you to mostly run from confrontation in order to complete your missions. Red October is truly a unique game and one that has been lost for ages.

3. Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay – PC, Xbox, PS2

I will not lie, but the movie this prequel game is based on sucked. It was just a complete mess. Escape from Butcher Bay on the other hand was amazing. You take control of the anti-hero as he fights his way out of the “supposed” most secure prison in the galaxy. The atmosphere of the game is gritty, violent, dark and amazing which for a First Person Shooter wasn't done often or very well.

2. Goldeneye 007 – Nintendo 64

Seriously what can I say that hasn’t been said about this game? Goldeneye had a long and fun single player campaign with lots of unlockables to get depending on the level of difficulty you play the game in. And let’s not forget the amazing multiplayer aspect of the game that keeps t alive in the hearts of millions of gamers everywhere. And its truly a shame that a port to Xbox Live Arcade was sidelined for good since Nintendo and Microsoft couldn’t come to an agreement.

1. The Thing – PC, Xbox, PS2

It John Carpenter ever got around to making a sequel it might’ve been something like this. Even as rumors of Universal’s plans to do a Carpenter-less sequel for the past 6 years, its nice to know someone cared enough to give us this amazing game. Despite being a very tough action game, The Thing included many cool game play elements including a trust system. Pretty much you had to prove to others that you weren’t infected and had to maintain that trust through various deeds. Sometimes they work other times you men will go crazy and kill themselves. The game had amazing depth and a movie quality storyline that put this game at the top of the list.

Honorable Mention

Star Wars Games - Various Systems - Seriously you go and pick out one of the 60+ games based on the 6 movies and try and put them in my list. It wouldn't be far at all just to pick one or two.

Batman Begins - Xbox, PS2 - This is quite possibly the BEST batman to come out since Batman Return on the Gamegear. it was fun, dark, gritty just like the movie but it fell short of the list because of its formula gameplay.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie - Sega Genesis - This is possible the best Power Rangers game period. It followed a sidescrolling Beat'em up style of gameplay and that made it very fun but not enough to make the list.

Jurassic Park - Genesis - This game was the best out of all the J.Park games that came out. It was really fun to play as either Grant or a Raptor with some of the most challenging 2D platforming action around. however the game had its hiccups and prevents from being on the list.

Games that Don't deserve to be on the list

Spider-Man Movie games - PS2, Gamecube, Xbox - No! I see this game for what it really is. Its nothing more than the original Spiderman released for the PSone, N64 and Dreamcast with elements of the movie slapped all over the place. It plays exactly the same witht the same movelist and everything.

Lord of the Ring Games - PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, PC - Honestly I didn't enjoy any of these games. They were too button masher friendly and very linear and the MMO should've came out years ago when Everquest hit the scene. Its just one out of a hundred MMO's that doesn't set itself apart from the group with exception to the Tolkein name.

Enter The Matrix, The Matrix Online - PC, Xbox, Gamecube, PS2 - All flash and no substance. The special effects were very cool but quickly grew lame like the latter two matrix films.

The second GVN summer Bash will be held Aug 23rd at the Virtual Rush lan center in Media, PA.

There will be a Regular and Tag Team Tournament for DOA4 and Tekken Tag. There will be a singles tournament for Virtua Fighter 5, Tekken 5 DR, Soul Calibur 4 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Sponsorship has not been resolved at this time. I know we are cutting it close but we will get it resolved soon.

Really BIG freakin news. GVN summer bash 2 will be aug 23rd at virtual rush.

Paul of Virtual Rush and I had a huge discussion and here's what came out of it. VR has partnered with VGxpo and are looking to host a ton of console and pc based tourneys with them. He is also about to finish this deal with someone who will help with GVN SB2 sponsorship. Paul of VR said they are working hard on obtaining one or more sponsors for this tournament.

So now you have a date and place and a very strong reason for going. This means smaller venue/pot fees and bigger numbers for all games.

So sorry for having a few months on inactiveness but I am back. And today at GVN we are going to have a look back at one of the oddest and most original games released for the Nintendo Entertainment System, A Boy and His Blob. A game that as the years passed, more and more people became aware of this game but still forgot about.

Back in the late 80’s when the NES was the king of the console market, a man by the name of David Crane work on and released a boy and his blob in 1989. The company he worked for was Imagineering, which sadly, is no longer around. David Crane however is most famous for creating Pitfall on the Atari 2600.

A boy and his blob is a very unique, complex and bizarre game. Starting off with the story as the “boy” and his friend, Blobert, set out on an adventure to save Blobert’s home planet of Blobolonia. First I want to point out the oddity of the boy not having a name but the blob does. Anyway, it would appear Blobolonia is under rule of an evil emperor and it’s up the “The Boy” and Blobert to save the day.

And how did they plan to do so? Why with Jellybeans of course. The odd gameplay in A Boy And His Blob involves the management of jellybeans and the affect that each one have on Blobert. The jellybeans, when consumed, allows “Blobert” to transform into many kinds of helpful tools to making it through your adventure.

There are a grand total of 14 jellybeans ranging from flavors of licorise to tangerine to ketchup. The tools that your blob transforms into depend on which jellybean he consumes. Throwing him a Strawberry flavored bean makes the blob transform into a bridge and a Lime bean transform him into a Key (Get it? Key-Lime?). And it is only through the power of jelly beans that you can beat the game.

Well that and throwing vitamins down the throat of the Emperor to beat the game. And not being able to jump, or punch. But forget about the oddity and inconsistency of this game. This game was fun, at times it can be rather hard to control but it was fun. In fact when David Crane showed the game at CES in 1989, it won best of show.

In 1990, the game was published by Jaleco in Japan. When it arrived in japan, there were a few changes made to the game. For one the game was renamed to Fushigi na Blobby: Blobania no Kiki which translate to Mysterious Blobby: The Crisis of Blobania. The other change made to the game was to the boy’s sprite. Instead of a tall skinny pale white boy the sprite was change to a manga style school boy. The final change was to the games title screen which was more abstract and colorful as opposed to the dull title screen of the American version.

The same year the game was released in japan a sequel was released for Nintendo’s new handheld, The Gameboy. The sequel was called The Rescue of Princess Blobette and the premise of the game was pretty much the same. Instead the plot revolves around the boy and the blob running around a castle trying to rescue the Princess of Blobolonia from an evil Alchemist. The game play was the same and had no additions added to it whatsoever. The game however was more frustrating than the NES version and it eventually lead to many people putting the game away.

After The Rescue of Princess Blobette was released no more sequels were announced. David Crane’s company went brankrupt and the license disappeared. However in 2005, Majesico made the surprise announcement at E3 that they were working on a sequel that would run on the DS. The game was going to have 3D graphics but still play on a 2D plain and would use the stylus for managing the blob’s jellybeans. The game was slated for a late 2005 release but it never came.

One of the speculated reasons that Majesco never released it was because of the company’s financial problems. Majesco was known for publishing games like Bloodranye which were good but didn't sell well and in the end caused problems for Majesco. Rumor has it that the game was completed but was trashed. It is safe to speculate however that we may still have a chance to see a sequel. It’s just a matter of when.

I'm not gone I am still around. I haven't been around the past 3 weeks because it was crunch time. I got married two fridays ago(Sept 7th). Anyway things have settled down somewhat and I will return to setting up the last GVN event of the year, actually write up my next lost gems article and get back to work on GVN as a whole.
